Amateur Radio Category Added

Yes, it’s true! In addition to being a certified geek, I’m also an avid fan of Amateur Radio. As such, I have added a new category called Amateur Radio to be used to mark posts that involve topics related to that field.

Stay tuned for some amateur radio goodness…

And Now For Something Not So Completely Different…

Greetings all!

When I first started this blog, it was to provide a place for people without a lot of technology skills to be able to learn about technology from one who could both understand it and explain it. This was a great idea…until I realized that no one is really interested in such a thing!

You see, when I analyzed the web traffic to this site, what I’ve found is that non-technical people are only visiting the site to look for specific answers to specific questions. They have a problem they want to solve…and they want to solve it NOW. They are not interested (for the most part) in understanding the underlying “how” and “why” of the problem…they mostly just want a “click this, drag that, push this button” type of solution to their problem.

In honor of this, I am now shifting this blog to be a bit more technical, bringing it closer in line to an actual professional blog. I have a lot to say about the things I do in my day job (from a technology point of view), as well as plenty to add about my exploits in the lab at home during my spare time (not that there is much of that).

One other change I am making to the blog: I am getting inundated with spammers setting up accounts on this site. I have therefore disabled users from creating an account. If you would like an account on this site so you can join in on the discussion (which is always welcome), I am happy to furnish one…but please use the feedback form under “contact us” to let us know you would like an account. Send us your email address and we’ll get to you shortly.

Other than that, here’s to a new direction for CompuBlab!

Sincerely,

Peter S. Lee

Happy New Year!

CompuBlab Caters to Low Vision

Greetings all!

For some time now I have wanted to make this site more accessible and hopefully enjoyable to those with low vision. I know there are screen readers and such available to help those who cope with less than perfect vision, but I thought I could do a bit more to make your viewing experience a bit more enjoyable.

Therefore, I am instituting a policy where posts on CompuBlab.com will now have mp3 audio versions of its content posted along with the content itself. It will take some time to add audio to the existing posts on the site, but I am expecting all new posts to have both the text and the mp3 audio available at the time of posting.

If you should be using a screen reader and experience any difficulty in retrieving the audio content of this site, please use the “Contact Us” menu across the top of the blog to let us know (click here for email form) . We welcome such comments and will do our best to accommodate your needs on this site.

Geek Alert Category Added

The target audience of this blog is primarily the common man and woman. However, there are times when I just HAVE to write about something I’ve been doing or come across that is a bit more involved and possibly technically beyond the casual computer user. If you see an article posted into this category, it means that it will be more technically oriented than the standard blog posting.

If you consider yourself a “common man or woman” with respect to computing, please do still read the posts in this category. If you find it is getting over your head, don’t worry about skipping it. If you find yourself getting the gist of the message, then pat yourself on the back and consider re-evaluating your image of your self with respect to computing.

Thanks!

You Should All Know Better!

Greetings All!

I cannot believe that I let an entire month go by with not so much as a single post. The day job got very crazy for a while there and I just never had a moment to formulate my thoughts on the many subjects that came flying by. In fact, I started 4 or 5 posts and now they don’t make any sense to finish as they are on topics that are too out of date with respect to the news.

But in the intervening time, something HAS come up which will never go out of date…and that is some basic courtesy from those who join this blog.

I am going to amend the general rules here to point out something you should already know…if you wish to create an account and contribute to the discussion…that’s great! However, if you want to promote your own websites and nothing else, you are not welcome here.

Therefore, effectively immediately, user logins whose emails look like they are computer or randomly generated, or log in names that appear to be simply advertisements, will result in the deletion of the account without any notice. Period.

This blog is here for a number of reasons:

  1. A place for me to pontificate
  2. A place for people to exchange ideas (preferably technology oriented, but anything interesting is free game)
  3. A place to try to help less tech-savvy people understand and effectively use technology

If your interest in CompuBlab is nothing more than trying to boost your search ranking in Google, may I suggest you check out this really good book about Search Engine Optimization:

Posting Guidelines

Greetings All!

Here at CompuBlab.com we encourage insightful and wholesome discussion regarding technology issues and also the occasional “off-topic” discuss as well.

Since I had not given much thought as to what to do when people actually wanted to comment or post on this blog, I am developing a set of guidelines that should be quick to read and plain to understand. However, please note the following:

  1. ALL posts on this board are moderated. That is, no post, be it a comment or it’s own original post, is allowed to appear on the blog until a CompuBlab staff member reviewed and approved it. I know this slows down the discussions on the blog, but it is the only sure fire way to ensure quality content and spam-free discussions. I will do all in my power to keep spammers and their like away from posting on this blog.
  2. If you sign up for an account, you will first be given the status of “subscriber,” which allows you to update your profile, but not to post or comment. As soon as a CompuBlab.com staff member reviews your account, you will be upgraded to a “contributor,” which allows you to post your own posts and make comments on other posts (see below regarding moderation of posts). Please be sure to enter your real First and Last Name into your profile. This is a requirement for posting on this board.
  3. As a “contributor,” ALL of your posts are moderated (which means your post does not appear on the blog until a staff member has approved it)
  4. Please note that in order for any of your posts to be approved by the staff you MUST have a valid First and Last name set on your profile.
  5. After some time has passed and you have demonstrated that you are a solid contributor to the blog, you may be given authority by the staff to post without moderation. It is our intention to allow people their own freedom to post as they will here, but that is a privilege to be earned, not a right.
  6. The staff reserves the right to decide who is allowed to post here and who is not.

Out goal here is to provide a quality blog and a pleasant online experience.

I will in the coming days codify these thoughts into an official policy that will be posted on the blog. I also invite your comments and suggestions (use the feedback form on the Contact Us page).
